The Soviets forces won this battle because they outsmarted Germany and surrounded them. In addition, Germany’s supplies were running very low. Eventually, the German troops surrendered by General Friedrich von Paulus’ command. Hitler did not advance eastward across Russia, but retreated westward into Germany. After the battle, there were over 1.4 million dead soldiers and 40,000 civilians dead.
